What
is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy? (HBOT)
HBOT is a treatment in which one is in a pressure vessel breathing
100% oxygen at greater than normal room pressure. Hyperbaric
therapy was originally used to recompress deep sea divers once
they got to the surface to avoid getting the 'bends'. By decompressing
divers slowly in a vessel at the surface, they could avoid gas
bubbles from forming in their bodies, which could cause 'stroke-like'
symptoms.
How Does HBOT Work?
The
increased pressure in the HBOT vessel causes oxygen to dissolves
into the liquid portion of the blood. Oxygen carrying blood cells
and the super-oxygenated plasma (the fluid transport of red blood
cells) deliver aggressive levels of oxygen throughout the system.
Is
Breathing Oxygen at Room Pressure as Beneficial as HBOT?
Breathing
100% oxygen at room pressure could assure 100% saturation of the
red blood cells. Oxygen at room pressure will not dissolve any
additional oxygen into the body fluids for a 'super saturation'
effect.
What
is a Treatment Like?
HBOT
is relaxing and one can enjoy an inspirational book, CD or DVD
while breathing pure refreshing oxygen in the pressurized vessel.
Is
HBOT the Primary Therapy?
There
are some conditions that respond solely to HBOT. Typically we
recommend that a well rounded approach to health be considered
when using HBOT.
